Brief
Shellharbour City Council in New South Wales Australia launched their new Arts and Cultural Development Strategy in consultation with their local community. To launch and promote their strategy, they approached us to create and produce a short video.
In creating the Make Play Grow video, Council chose to illustrate and show the community the information, rather than just tell.
The focus was to generate interest and enthusiasm within the community, rather than sell the ideas, or simply report information. A video has the ability to deliver a big message in a small amount of time, using a visually engaging method. The format is relevant not only to the creative and artistic communities, but is a widely accessible and easily digestible format for the broader community.
In setting the tone for the Make Play Grow strategy, the stakeholders wanted to take a step away from the corporate face of Council, and the corporate branding.
Process
Being really drawn to stop-motion and the handmade quality of our work we were given complete creative freedom and so decided to go all out with a 100% paper look from building tiny little houses to oversized pineapples! All elements were created by hand from paper and cardboard. This direct reference to the handmade is an important reflection on the value the strategy places on arts and creative activity in the local government area. The use of stop-motion and human interaction with the low-poly paper props, accompanied by simple and concise language, depicts the key information from the strategy.
